Catch Scammon Bay Vs. Aniak Girls 1A State Basketball Semifinals On Friday

Two Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta girls basketball teams will face off for one of the semifinal rounds of the State 1A tournament. After winning both their games on Thursday, Scammon Bay and Aniak will compete Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

Two-time defending state champion Scammon Bay won big against Tri-Valley on Thursday, ending the game 65 to 41. Scammon Bay thundered to the lead, sinking 27 points in the first eight minutes of the game. By halftime, Scammon stood solidly ahead 42 to 17, eventually winning the game by a 24-point margin. Throughout the match, Scammon Bay forced 35 turnovers and snatched 29 steals. Scammon’s Hayley Aklerelrea locked in a game-high of 22 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Almira Kaganak netted 17 points and grabbed seven steals.

Also on Thursday, Aniak beat another Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta competitor, St. Mary’s, 84 to 54.

Aniak scored the game’s first 16 points without an answer and carried that lead through to the end. Aniak’s Shauna Koonuk sunk 24 points and recorded seven rebounds, seven steals, and three assists. Meanwhile, teammate Kayla Morgan netted 21 points and nine rebounds. For the St. Mary’s team, Danessa Evan scored 25 points, and Jada Peterson added six points and nine rebounds.

St. Mary’s will play Tri-Valley at 11 a.m. on Friday in a consolation round. Scammon Bay verses Aniak will follow later that evening at 6:30 p.m.
