Bethel Wrestling Tournament Yields Ribbons

It was a good weekend for Bethel’s high school wrestlers. 

The Bethel boys won five first-place finishes in the Bethel Scramble Wrestling Match.

Landon Smith got the blue in the 103-pound category, defeating Seth Jacob of Napaskiak. Jacob Smith won in the 112-pound category. He bested Demetry Hoseth from Dillingham in the championship match. Hayden Lieb took home a first-place finish in the 135-pound bracket when he won the match, defeating Nate Cushman from Nome. In the high school boys 189-pound category, Simon Snow took home the blue in his match with Cain Isidore of Alakanuk. Ryan Smith placed first in the 285-pound bracket for the Bethel High School boys wrestling team. He faced the same opponent two times, and won both matches against Nathaniel Bagongon of Emmonak.

Bethel high school wrestler Nelson Evans placed in the 130-pound bracket. He fought hard, but lost in a major decision to Caleb Evatt of Nome who took home the blue ribbon. In the 189-pound bracket, Shaun Peters took home the team’s third place ribbon when he won by a fall over Kusmak Tuday from Emmonak.

And two fourth place finishes were landed by Joshua Pavil and Max Black. In the 135-pound bracket, Pavil had to settle for fourth when Edward Atcherian from Chevak won the match for third-place. Clifford Damian of Alakanuk sent Bethel's Max Black home with a fourth-place finish in the 145-pound bracket when he won the match with a forfeit.

The Bethel High School girls also took home  wins this weekend. They brought home three first-place finishes in the Bethel Scramble.

Dellarae Charile took home a blue ribbon when she won the match with Theresa Savo of Dillingham in the 112-pound bracket. Jaron Mute placed first in the 130-pound bracket, winning a challenge from Charity Boyscout of Chevak. The last high school lady wrestler to bring home the blue was Lindsey Beans-Polk. The competition was tough. She defeated teammate Rebecca Samuelson, who had to settle for second place.

The lady wrestlers also brought home two third place finishes: Shanna Mendenhall won her match against Amanda Maxi of Napaskiak for a third-place ribbon in the 160-pound bracket. Alexis Kinegak was doing great until she faced off against Alisha Waska of St. Mary’s. Waska won that match and Kinegak took third-place for Bethel.
