Bethel Restaurant Receives City's Approval For Liquor License

Bethel City Council has decided not to protest a liquor license requested by Snack Shack restaurant. If granted a license, the eatery would become the second restaurant in Bethel to serve alcohol.

Anthony Nelson, a minister at the nearby Bethel Dream Center, pointed out that having a liquor-serving establishment close by could tempt the recovering alcoholics at the Center.

“We serve the people who are most needy in this area for that sort of addiction. We have a recovery program at the Dream Center, we have a feeding program, we reach out to those who are struggling and hurting in that area, and not more than a couple hundred feet across the way will be another liquor-selling location," said Nelson.

The current city ordinance gives the council legal grounds to protest liquor stores for those sorts of reasons, but does not extend to restaurant licenses.

The restaurant cannot begin serving alcohol until it expands its parking area, which could be as next year.

Six council members were present at the meeting with Rick Robb calling in at 8 p.m., and Nikki Hoffman absent.
