Bethel City Council member Fritz Charles was released from the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center on Tuesday, June 5, 2019. Bethel Police arrested him for driving under the influence the Sunday prior, after Alaska State Troopers found him “passed out” behind the steering wheel at Crowley Fuels, according to a police report.

Charles told police that he had not been driving, but his wife, Sharon Charles, who was with him, told the officers that he had driven to the gas station.

Charles initially refused a breath test, but after officers transported him to the correctional center he submitted and blew a 0.301, over three times the legal limit for operating a motor vehicle.

Charles' next hearing is scheduled for July 16, 2019.
