The Association of Village Council Presidents unanimously passed a resolution yesterday to address alcohol-related issues currently affecting the YK Delta. Two liquor stores opened in Bethel this year, and some tribes say that alcohol problems have worsened in their villages as a result.

According to a story in Alaska Dispatch News, the resolution came from the Tuluksak tribe. At the meeting, Tuluksak Council President Peter Andrew said that every community in the region is being affected in one way or another, and some of the alcohol is getting to kids as well. Other villages voiced their support, and the motion passed unanimously.

The resolution calls on AVCP to seek to address education about alcohol and drug abuse, treatment for chronic abusers, homelessness, children in foster care, public safety, and the restriction of alcohol sales in villages. AVCP also requested that both the Bethel liquor stores and the possible marijuana retail stores provide monetary support for the tribes to address alcohol and drug issues.
