The Association of Village Council Presidents is holding a bylaw convention with representatives from member tribes in the region. The meeting is only for AVCP tribal members.

The Bylaw Convention is scheduled to start at 9am Wednesday and Thursday, at the Orutsararmiut Native Council Multipurpose Building in Bethel.

AVCP is a tribal organization of 56 villages, it was established in 1964 by the federal government.

Former AVCP President and CEO Myron Naneng resigned from his position last month after 24 years in the position. During his final year, AVCP laid-off 30 employees, and a KYUK investigation revealed longtime mishandling of federal funds intended for low-income families.

Following the controversies, a minority of AVCP tribal representatives called for voting Naneng out of office at the nonprofit’s upcoming annual convention.

AVCP denied requests from KYUK to air the meeting live.
