  A KYUK story about the baby formula shortage in Russian Mission caught the eye of artist and activist CeeJay Johnson, who stepped in to organize a big donation. The U.S. Post Office in Russian Mission has been intermittently closed for nearly half a year. Both the village store and mothers on the Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) rely on USPS for formula shipments, and have been running dangerously low.

Residents of Marshall, AK are able to ship alcohol into the community for the first time in over three decades. Voters overturned its alcohol local option status, changing the village from dry to wet. The new law comes with plenty of stipulations.

In last night’s meeting, the Bethel City Council voted to extend COVID-19 related emergency mandates by two months. This includes the airport and mask mandates. It also extended the measure that prevents shut offs for unpaid water bills.

Several communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta are providing residents with "quarantine quarters", where they can quarantine or isolate for 14 days so that they don’t risk spreading COVID-19 to family members and others.

The controversial sugary beverage tax prompted hours of discussion by Bethel residents, advocacy organizations, and city council members in last night’s meeting. The council voted to introduce the ordinance, but tabled the public hearing and final vote until April 2021.

Emmonak is the latest community in the region to develop community spread of COVID-19, according to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation. Active cases in the lower Yukon hub cannot be linked to outside travel. This means that COVID-19 is spreading among community members.


Bethel City Council has been weighing a potential new tax on sugary beverages. The tax is up for discussion in the Bethel City Council meeting on Dec. 8.

In their meeting on Jan. 11, Bethel City Council could decide who to hire for the open Bethel City Manager position.
