The Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee racing season wrapped up this weekend with the Campout Race. Kwethluk’s Raymond Alexie finished on top once again.

Mushers racing in the 45th running of the Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race began to cross the finish line on the Kuskokwim River the morning of Jan. 28, 2024. Pete Kaiser placed first, earning his 8th K300 title. In second place was Matt Failor, and in third Travis Beals.

Bethel musher Pete Kaiser’s consistency secured his eighth K300 title in the past 10 years. Four of the top 10 finishers were first-time K300 mushers.

Bethel musher Pete Kaiser has won his eighth Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race title. The 36-year-old musher arrived in Bethel on Jan. 28 after distancing Matthew Failor and Travis Beals in the final hours of racing in frigid temperatures. He finished the race with all 12 dogs that he brought to the starting line.

While Ryan Redington was first into Kalskag, defending Kuskokwim 300 champion Pete Kaiser and 2019 K300 champ Matt Failor surged to the front of the race for the critical run downriver to Tuluksak.

14 mushers raced on an icy, fast trail from Bethel to Akiak and back in the 2024 Akiak Dash Sled Dog Race. The race began with a mass start on the frozen Kuskokwim River in front of Bethel. 16-year-old Akiachak musher Schouviller Wassillie Jr. won the race in his rookie run.

Alexie had been undefeated since 2022. It was his first time running the Kuskokwim 300.

Not all mushers are quiet, but Raymond Alexie is, and seems to find solace in the near-silent hours with his dogs. He is an observer. Learning how his dogs behave, knowing when to push them and when to take it slow is what has made him so successful.
