Sport Fishing Season Open, But With Limitations

Krysti Shallenberger

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, sport fishing is still allowed across the state, but participants must adhere to current health restrictions.

The Native Village of Kwinhagak passed a resolution asking state officials to close the summer sport fishing season. The community has a small but thriving sport fishing industry thanks to the rich variety of silver salmon and trout in the Kanektok and Arolik rivers.

Despite the request, state officials have decided to keep both the personal and sport fishing seasons open across the state. Residents in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta rely on subsistence salmon fishing for the majority of their diet. In a release, state officials said that people participating in sport fishing must obey local health mandates and purchase all supplies from their community of origin. Officials urge people to wear face masks and practice social distancing when fishing.
