The region’s first doses of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine are expected to arrive in Bethel on Dec. 16, according to Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation Vice President of Communications Tiffany Zulkosky.

In an interview last week, YKHC Chief of Staff Dr. Ellen Hodges said that the health corporation expects to receive 1,000 doses of the vaccine in its first shipment. Those initial doses will go to residents of the Bethel Elder’s Home, and to the region’s health care workers who could have possible exposure to patients with COVID-19. YKHC expects to receive a second vaccine shipment two weeks later.

The vaccine requires two doses, given three weeks apart, to be effective.
