A Bethel police officer shot a person who allegedly threatened the officer with a knife, according to an online dispatch from the Alaska State Troopers. The shooting occurred on Dec. 11.

The suspect is being treated for a life-threatening injury, and the officer is not injured. The Bethel Police Department asked the Alaska State Troopers to help investigate the shooting, and members of the troopers’ Alaska Bureau of Investigation responded to assist.

This is the second weekend in a row that a Bethel police officer has shot a person holding a sharp object. On Dec. 5, an officer shot a man holding two axes outside of Alba’s Coffee Shop. According to Bethel police, the man threatened the officer with the axes. The officer was not injured and was put on routine leave pending an investigation, along with the other officer who responded to the scene. Police classified the suspect’s injury as non-life-threatening. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is reviewing this shooting as well.
