Bethel Takes Steps Towards ATV Rules

After much public outcry, the Bethel City Council is preparing to act on an ordinance that would clarify Bethel’s off-road vehicle laws and restore the authority of police to issue - or not issue - citations for driving on city roads.

The official vote is in: Emmonak has voted yes to alcohol sales, but questions are arising about the process for the second time.

In the village's second attempt to conduct a vote on the legalization of alcohol last week, 111 people voted yes to alcohol sales, and 103 voted no. The first time, votes were thrown out after being improperly counted. This time, city and tribal authorities are wondering if they were asking the right question.

The Bethel Police Department's crackdown on ATV use, as directed by the City Council, will be examined again at tonight’s meeting after public outcry. Research shows that ATV use is a major cause of injury in the area, but law enforcement may not have the authority to deal with it.

Ask for a description of ATVs on the roadways in Bethel, and you might get this:

“Kids riding with their parents, or no helmets, no insurance, no drivers license," Vice President of Bethel Search and Rescue Fritz Charles said, "doing about 50, 60 miles per hour down the road.”

AVCP Selects First Woman CEO

The Association of Village Council Presidents has selected its first female CEO: Vivian Johnson Korthuis. The decision comes on the third day of the regional nonprofit corporation's annual convention, after a year fraught with challenges. Some see this convention, and the change it has brought, as the light at the end of the tunnel.

Tuesday was the first day of the Association of Village Council Presidents' annual three-day convention. A lot happened, and more is to come today and tomorrow. KYUK’s Anna Rose MacArthur was at the meeting Tuesday and talks with KYUK’s Adrian Wagner about what went on.

2016 AVCP Annual Convention Begins

Tribal members and delegates from across 56 villages are coming together in Bethel this week for the annual convention of the Association of Village Council Presidents. And the agenda for the Native regional non-profit corporation is a full one.

Bethel City Council has asked both State Troopers and Bethel PD to more actively enforce existing laws and ordinances banning ATVs on roadways, something Mayor Rick Robb voted against at Tuesday's council meeting.
