Video: Pit Or No Pit? LKSD Journalism Students Ask The Question Of The Weekend.

Twenty-one high school girls from schools across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta compete in Bethel's brutal cross-country Pit Race on September 16, 2017.

There's a fiery debate in Bethel over a grueling tradition coming to an end. For the first time since the 1990s, the Bethel Regional High School Cross-Country Invitational will not run through the notorious Bethel sand pit.

The sandy course is infamous for its steep hills and relentlessly unstable surface, but after school personnel raised safety concerns, the race has been moved to the dusty Bethel roads. The race is occurring on Saturday, and in preparation, Lower Kuskokwim School District journalism students asked Bethel students and staff the big question: “Pit or no pit?”

The BRHS Cross-Country Invitational will start this Saturday in the BRHS parking lot. Middle school races start at 10:00 a.m. and the high school races will begin at 11:45 a.m.

This video was produced by LKSD journalism students Lucilia Angaiak of Tununak, Dorothy Jackson of Nightmute, Katya John of Tuntutuliak, and Kaylee King of Mekoryuk. The students are attending Bethel Regional High School this semester as LKSD Media Ready students.
