Search Still Underway For Missing Kasigluk Man

As the weather continues to get colder, the search for Wassilie Keene continues near Kasigluk. Keene went missing seven days ago, according to Kasigluk Search and Rescue President Wilson Twitchell. Keene is from Kasigluk, and was last seen on Wednesday, October 24, wearing a tan colored jacket. Searchers have concentrated their efforts on Nanvarnaq Lake, several miles south of Kasigluk.

Twitchell says that he’s grateful for the 13-hour days that volunteers have put in daily, and for help from neighboring communities in the Y-K Delta, including Nunapitchuk, Atmautlauk, Akiachak, Napaskiak, Kwethluk, and Bethel. Searchers' morale remains high, and donations of gas and food have made all the difference, says Twitchell. “All in all, everybody is working together; that’s the most important thing,” he said.

Searchers will continue to concentrate their search efforts by land and air at the lake until freeze up, and then return to searching overland.

Correction: Our story now reflects the correct spelling of Wassilie Keene's name. Also, a previous version of this article stated the search for Wassilie Keene centered around Nunavakpak Lake. That information is incorrect. The search centered around Nanvarnaq Lake.
