Russian Mission Runway Lights Repaired

Broken light fixtures line the Russian Mission runway following a vandalism spree by a group of young children during the third weekend in April of 2018.

Night flights can now land in Russian Mission. All the runway lights in the community are fixed following a vandalism spree over the weekend.

Jim Duffy maintains the runway and made the repairs on Monday afternoon. He replaced 38 smashed lights and four damaged fixtures. That’s less than the over 50 broken runway lights initially reported by the Alaska State Troopers.

Duffy says that a small group of six to nine year olds caused the damage. Duffy has talked to the children’s parents, and the school says that they are explaining to classrooms how the destruction hurts the entire community.

Duffy says that no flights were canceled because of the broken lights.
