Oscarville Should See Electricity Costs Drop With New Electric Meters

Oscarville residents should see their electric costs go down in the next few months.

AVEC, the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, is working with the Oscarville village corporation to install new meters so that residents can buy electricity directly from AVEC.

“So we expect that to be by the end of the year, hopefully sooner, which will be great for them because all the private residences will be eligible now for PCE," said AVEC’s Rural Liaison Anna Sattler.

PCE stands for Power Cost Equalization. It’s a program which the State of Alaska pays a portion of rural electric bills to bring rural electricity prices closer to urban costs.

Currently, AVEC sells electricity to the village corporation, who marks up the price before selling it to the community.

To make the direct billing possible, the village corporation is buying new AVEC-compliant electric meters for residences and public buildings. Businesses are purchasing their own meters.

The meters should arrive next week and be installed over the next two months.
