Napaskiak Woman Released From Custody And Murder Charges Dropped Following Evidence Of Self-Defense

Alaska State Troopers

A Napaskiak woman has been released from custody and the murder charges against her have been dropped after evidence surfaced that she acted in self-defense.

Prosecuting Attorney Michael Gray has ordered the release of 20-year-old Kayla Jacob following the new evidence.

A State Trooper affidavit says that in November 2014, a Village Public Safety Officer in Napaskiak found 28-year-old Matthew Beaver not breathing with a puncture wound in his chest and Jacob crying on the floor. A large knife was found on the scene. Jacob admitted to stabbing Beaver and was charged with first and second degree murder. Troopers say both had been drinking alcohol.

The charges against Jacob have been dropped, and she was released on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving.

Correction: The name of the person who ordered the release of Kayla Jacob has been corrected.
