School is back in session and student journalists at the Lower Kuskokwim School District are hard at work. A new crew of reporters are continuing the weekly segment called “Here’s What It Is At LKSD.” It’s a regular roundup of activities happening across the school district. What’s happening this weekend is sports.

Transcript:

Here’s what it is at LKSD.

Inaugural Tundra Muck and Rubber Boat Regatta:

Gladys Jung Elementary is hosting the Inaugural Tundra Muck and Rubber Boat Regatta on Saturday, September 15 at 4 p.m. Sixth and seventh grade crews of two to three people will haul their rubber boats across the tundra, up a hill, down the other side, and race across the pond before returning with their boats back to the starting line. Platinum, Bethel, and Ayaprun Elitnaurvik will be participating in this event.

The race will begin at 9468 Ayaginar Street. That is the last house on the fourth road of Tundra Ridge. Spectators will want to bring rubber boots to get to the best places to observe both the running and the rowing. You will get muddy as a spectator of this event, so dress accordingly.

Gladys Jung has seven boats available for the race, but needs more. If you have a rubber boat light enough for students to drag across the tundra, please contact Gladys Jung Elementary.

Calling all volleyballers!

Nelson Island School is hosting a Volleyball Tournament Fundraiser on September 14 and 15 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. For just $10, you can play in the tournament all weekend.

Who can play: Ninth graders through adults. Teams can be co-ed. Six or more players make a team. Rookies and pros are welcome.

You can call or text 907-744-7293 with your team or sign up individually. They will create a bracket based on who signs up. Please sign up by Friday at 2:00 p.m. You can also just come and watch the fun for $1 at the door

Bethel Cross-Country Invitational:

This Saturday is the Bethel Cross-Country Invitational. Teams from all around our region will be in Bethel to compete. This year the race will not be at the pit; instead it will start in the BRHS parking lot and end in front of the LKSD District Office. Middle School races start at 10:00 a.m. and the High School races will begin at 11:45 a.m. Those who would like to come watch are being asked to park their vehicles at M.E. This will be an exciting race, so please come out to support the runners.

This is Kaylee, Lucillia, Dorothy, and Katya. And that’s what it is at LKSD.
