Bethel Places First In Great Alaska Wrestling Tournament

The Bethel Warriors head to the state tournament in Anchorage after a victory in this weekend's 2016 Great Alaska Conference wrestling tournament.

Out of the 17 teams that participated, Bethel came in way ahead with 339.5 team points, beating runner-up Unalaska who scored 170.5 team points. Warriors also earned individual honors in the tournament:

For the boys, Thomas Dyment came in first in the 106 pound weight class, scoring 21 individual points. Hayden Lieb came out on top in the 132 pound weight class, scoring 26 individual points. Both Lieb and Dyment were voted "outstanding wrestler" for the boys.

For the girls, Kelly O’Brien came in first for in the 145 pound weight class, scoring 22 individual points. O’Brien was also voted "outstanding wrestler" for the girls.

For the boys, the top two wrestlers in each weight class will head to state. The champions in the girls' weight classes will also head to state. The Alaska Wrestling State Championship is scheduled for next weekend in Anchorage.

The Chevak Comets won the Academic Award, with a 3.48 GPA overall.  Scammon Bay coach John Uterryuk was awarded Outstanding Coach of the Year.
