The clock is ticking down to August 21, which is the day for primary elections in Alaska.

Yukon-Kuksokwim Delta residents get to choose from a plethora of candidates running for Governor and the state's lone U.S. House of Representatives seat in Congress.

There are eight candidates who want to be Alaska's next U.S. House member. Two are Democrats: Carol Hafner and Dimitri Shein. Christopher Cumings and Alyse Galvin are running in the Democratic primary as independents. Three are Republican: Don Young, who is the current representative, Thomas Nelson, and Jed Whittaker.

Gov. Bill Walker is in a tough, three-way race to hold onto his seat. Walker is running as an independent. In the Democratic primary, voters only have one choice: Mark Begich. The Republican gubernatorial  primary has seven candidates: Mike Dunleavy, Mead Treadwell, Darin Colbry, Thomas Gordon, Gerald Heikes, Michael Sheldon, and Merica Hlatcu.

Meanwhile, Alaska House District 38, which represents the Y-K Delta, is uncontested in the primaries. Darren Deacon, a Republican from Kalskag, and Tiffany Zulkosky, a Democrat and the current representative, will battle it out in the general election in November.

Meanwhile, any resident who wants to vote by mail must apply to do so by August 11. Voting opens up for early and absentee voters and those with special needs on August 6.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly said that Alyse Galvin and Christopher Cumings were on the independent ticket.
