To Aid Construction Of A Bethel Wind Turbine, KYUK Temporarily Going Off The Air In Some Communities

The Alaska Village Electric Cooperative is preparing to erect a 900-kilowatt wind turbine off of Bethel’s BIA Road. KYUK’s radio tower stands near the turbine site and for the safety of the construction workers, KYUK will lower the power on its 640 AM radio signal beginning Wednesday, June 27.

The KYUK tower will continue transmitting, but the signal’s range will be greatly reduced, and some outlying villages will not receive our radio signal during this time. The construction is expected to last about a week. In the meantime, you can listen to our programing by streaming KYUK here on our website.

The AVEC wind turbine is projected to produce 1.9 million kilowatt hours of energy annually and displace about 5 percent of Bethel’s diesel usage.
