Some people’s chance to swim in Bethel is funded by another person’s sweet tooth, and this weekend that fund just got bigger.

On Sunday, 206 pounds of donated cookies disappeared within a half hour at the Annual Christmas Cookie Extravaganza at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Fitness Center.

The Y-K Delta Lifesavers fundraiser started 24 years ago to collect money for a swimming pool in Bethel. Once the Fitness Center opened, the tradition has continued in order to support swim programs.

At $12 per pound, the Extravaganza raised $2,487.

The Y-K Delta Lifesavers plan to use the money to add half price swim days during the holidays, on Saturdays, and on Friday, December 22.
