
KYUK senior video producer Mike Martz came to Alaska as a high school teacher in 1973. He went to work at KYUK in 1982 as a television production assistant. Over the next 14 years Mike was cameraman, editor, director and producer of a wide variety of television programs focusing on the history, culture, political and social issues of the Yup'ik people of the Yukon/Kuskokwim Delta. In the late 1990’s he worked as an independent producer and as a media technician for the Lower Kuskokwim School District. He returned to KYUK as senior producer in July of 2000.
Mike’s documentary programs include Uncle Sam’s Men, the story of the service of Yup’ik men and women in the Alaska Territorial Guard during World War II and the award winning Platinum Dreams, chronicling the 40 year history of Alaska’s only platinum mine.
Mike was appointed to the Alaska State Historical Commission by Governor Frank Murkowski in January 2006. He’s a member of the Alaska Historical Society, the Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association (AMIPA) and the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA). Mike is also a public broadcasting representative on the Alaska Rural Communications Service (ARCS) Programming Council.
Mike is married to Cecilia Martz, originally from the village of Chevak, a retired University of Alaska associate professor. They have 4 grown children.
